Mount Cameroon is located in southwest Cameroon, near the Atlantic coast, opposite Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea. This island, Mount Cameroon, and other volcanoes belong to the Cameroon Line, a group of volcanoes and volcanic massifs forming a rift valley running from the Gulf of Guinea to Lake Chad. Administratively, the mountain’s summit is located on the border of the Fako and Meme departments in the Southwest region. Douala, Cameroon’s largest city, is located to the southeast.
It is one of the largest shield volcanoes, or stratovolcanoes, in Africa, with a volume of 1,400 km³ and a surface area approaching 1,300 km². It has the shape of an almost regular ellipse, oriented south-southwest to north-northeast, approximately 50 km by 35 km at its base. This red volcano was born from the volcanism of the Cameroon line rift associated with that of a hot spot.
